Grief Counseling for Healing and Hope

Your World Has Been Flipped Upside Down

Grief comes into our carefully constructed world and shakes it to its foundations. We are left with so many questions, and so few answers. “Why did this have to happen?” “Was there something I could have done to prevent this?” “Will I ever feel happy again?”

You are caught between the pain of remembering, and the fear of forgetting. You’re having trouble sleeping and eating. Even though you have people around you who mean well, sometimes all you really want is to be alone with your thoughts. You just can’t bear to hear one more “I’m sorry for your loss.” Other times, you crave for someone to just hold you and tell you it will be OK, even if you can’t bring yourself to really believe that yet. But no one seems to know how to comfort you, because no one can bring them back.

Inner Window Counseling is here to help you regain your ability to feel joy. As someone who has experienced deep loss myself, I know intimately how lost you can feel on this path. Our work together can bring you a sense of peace when you think of your loved one, not anguish and despair. You will never truly “get over” your loss, but you can learn how to carry it. You don’t have to forget them, and you never could even if you tried. You just need a way to let yourself know it’s OK to remember them without feeling like nothing will ever be good in your life again.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does therapy take? How long it takes depends on each person; sometimes 3-6 months is enough, other times it may take a year or more. It can depend on a lot of factors including amount of support you have outside of therapy, the number and nature of past losses, and your individual grieving style. Usually clients that are able to come at least once per week see the fastest progress. Each session lasts between 45-55 minutes, depending on what we need to cover that day. Grief is a journey that never fully ends, but it does change over time. There will come a day when you will have all you need to face this new reality if you allow yourself to take it one step at a time.

  • How do you help people with grief? Grief counseling will look different for each person, because each loss is different and each person grieves it in their own way. My approach is one of creating an environment of safety, where you don’t have to feel that you are burdening anyone or ashamed to discuss your true feelings. Whatever you are feeling is valid and normal in the absolute tornado that is grief. We will also talk about ways you can learn to express and feel your grief, by building your capacity to sit with the difficult emotions without feeling like you will become completely overwhelmed. Once you are able to let yourself feel without judgment, you will be surprised at the relief this will bring. We will also look at ways you can locate and utilize support. Finding community when you are grieving is essential, yet many people feel isolated due to their location, life stage, or past experiences that make it difficult to reach out. We will work together to help you overcome these challenges so you don’t have to feel alone in your grief. Finally and most importantly, I will teach you how to create a new relationship with the person or animal companion you lost. This relationship will of course be different than the one you had when they were living, but it can still bring you a sense of joy and closeness over time.

  • Do you accept my insurance? How much do sessions cost? I am in network with several insurances. You can also pay for sessions with a Health Spending Account or Flex Spending Account. For a full list of insurances I take and the cost for self-pay sessions, click here.

  • How can I get started? First we will have a free phone consultation for us to decide if we would work well together. I will find out more about your goals and you can ask any questions you have. If we’re a match, I will send you a link to some new client paperwork to complete electronically. After it’s completed, we will choose a mutual time to meet either in person or virtually.
